Pupils are given the elements to design and build 10 different models, with a choice of three varying wheel and cam mechanisms.
You can either make automata kits in The MAD Museum’s workshop, as part of a group trip or alternatively, we can provide you with the kits and resources for you to build them back in the classroom or at home.

MAD Workshop
Lesson Plan
After an explanation and demonstration about automata and cams, pupils (8 per session) then build their own piece of automata then decorate it. MAD Technicians are on hand throughout to support this activity and once made, all pupils take their finished creations home.

Appropriate for: Kits are appropriate for 5-11yrs + but due to the museum’s workshop table being quite high we recommend 7-11yrs+ if activity is held at The MAD Museum.

Classroom Activity

This is an alternate option to our MAD Workshop and is for larger groups or groups with a tight timeframe. We recommend a museum visit to support this activity but it’s not essential. Teachers are provided with enough kits per pupils, a lesson plan, follow-up sheet for the pupils and website links.
